Exploring a career as a Cardiac Physiologist (1 Day)

We are excited to offer this unique opportunity to shadow the work of our cardiac physiology colleagues in a busy acute hospital setting.

The placement will begin with an introduction to your host and the wider multidisciplinary team, followed by a guided tour throughout the department and cardio cath lab area.

Your host will will aim to show you the following: (*this is subject to patient consent and may vary per experience) * • Observing patients having ultrasounds of the heart – echocardiography • Observing patients having cardiac device checks • Observing patients having ECG / monitors fitted • Observing patients being treated in the lab behind the lead screen, if under 18 years. This could include angiography, device implants or electrophysiology • Observe exercise tests and or complex echo involving stress echoes or TOEs if appropriate.

This experience is provided for you to gain a real sense of what it would be like to work as a Cardiac Physiologist and ultimately inspire you to pursue a career within cardiology in the future.

The placement will be held in our Cardiology Department on Level 6 of Derriford hospital and is offered as a 1 day placement however can be adapted for any request between half a day to 5 full days to suit your availability and requirements.

In line with our risk assessment outcomes this opportunity is open for applications from those who have completed their GCSE studies. There is no upper age limit to this experience.

In order to protect you, our staff and patients, you will be supervised at all times and will not be permitted access to restricted areas unless under direct supervision.

Due to the anticipated demand for this experience, we are unable to guarantee a placement and all applications will be subject to a selection process.
